Divine Masculine: Sojourn into the Underworld

Journey Two: Illumination

The divine masculine archetypes are presented as five journeys that mirror life stages: adolescence, young adulthood, adulthood, wizened adulthood, and elderhood. Each journey reflects the challenges one has faced and the presence with which those challenges were met, leading to growth, resilience, and humility.

Journey Two introduces us to Thor, warhammer of discernment in his hand and upon whom a new dawn rises. The Sun itself greets him in the form of Apollo—radiant god of reason and revelation. In this golden phase, Thor moves through the world with confidence, applying hard-won knowledge. He is strong, capable, even joyful—believing, for a time, that the trials of youth are behind him. The world seems to affirm his efforts; his gifts are recognised.

Journey Two: Illumination

Yet in the shimmering radiance of Thor's rising confidence, a hooded figure waits. It is Merlin—not the bearded sage of old, but a youthful wanderer whose eyes gleam with clever potential. He offers insight, wrapped in riddle and performance. They walk together, experimenting with self-image, spiritual tricks, each compelled by the elusive allure of mastery. Thor begins to believe he understands the game—more, that he is the game.

But insight without integration creates imbalance. Enter Mars—raw force tempered by reason, directed within. Parts of Thor that do not fit his gleaming self-image rise up: anger, doubt, insecurity. Mars warns that divided ranks without clear leadership invite mutiny. A battle ensues—not of sword or flame, but of competing truths. In the aftermath, Thor is left asking: “Who am I really?"

In the widening maw of unanswered questions, Thor meets Atlas—the silent bearer of the world’s weight. Atlas says little, but his silence speaks volumes. Thor wonders if peace lies in stoicism. He begins to take on responsibility not as duty, but identity. Vulnerability is masked with strength; obligation worn like armour. He swears to hold it all together alone.

Despite, or perhaps because of, his efforts the heat of resistance continues to build. Under the unrelenting blaze of Ra, god of the midday sun, Thor’s masks begin to melt. Ra does not comfort or console—he exposes. Every illusion, every role Thor has adopted, is tested in the furnace of clarity. The half-truths covering implicit deceits are no longer tenable.

When Thor collapses beneath the weight of his own myth, Archangel Gabriel descends—not in flame or fury, but in voice. Gabriel teaches him to wield language, not as deception but as revelation. Thor learns that truth, spoken with clarity and compassion, can slice through obscurity better than any blade.

Humbled and clearer now, Thor encounters Hercules. The great hero does not boast of his labours, but instead teaches that no man lives without regret and what matters is not whether one has failed—but whether one chooses to rise again with integrity.

The mark of a man is evident in how he shows up today - not in the mistakes he made yesterday. Redemption therefore, is lived, moment to moment mindfully and with purposeful intent.

Raising his warhammer to the storm, lightning answers with a thunderous boom—and fire returns to Thor. But this time, it is not borrowed. It is sovereign. From the scorched embers of ego and idealism, Thor becomes Prometheus: the fire-bringer. Not a god among men, but a man who dares to carry light into the dark to those who need it most - his story continues in the next journey.
